Tofino and Ucluelet Forget the Foam

In the autumn of 2019, Surfrider Pacific Rim launched the Cut the Cutlery and Forget the Foam campaigns to eliminate plastic and bioplastic cutlery on the west coast, as well as polystyrene takeaway containers. Our ultimate goal was to build community compliance and then approach the District of Tofino and District of Ucluelet and ask them to add these plastics to the Single-Use Plastics Regulation. In October 2020, both Districts passed a motion to add these items to the Single-Use Plastics regulation, constituting another coastal victory! The polystyrene ban is approved and is expected to go into effect in 2021, but the Districts must await approval from the province to move forward with the plastic cutlery ban.
