Say NO to polystyrene, Norwalk!

The Norwalk Common Council's Ordinance Committee presented a new ordinance that passed the Common Council on September 10, 2019 banning single-use polystyrene foam food products!

The ordinance takes effect on Earth Day (April 22) 2020 and bans retail establishments from serving, selling, distributing or providing prepared food in polystyrene foam containers, and packaging ”peanuts” made of polystyrene foam (see page 97 of the 9/10/19 agenda for the approved ordinance). 

At the request of the Common Council President, our Northeast Regional Manager reviewed the proposed ordinance and offered feedback on the language and policy mechanisms. We recommended separately defining “foam” and “solid” polystyrene in order to meet the intended objectives stipulated in the draft of not only banning foam packaging filler, coolers and food service wares but also the solid lids and utensils. 

Our CT Chapter vice chair and chair attended several meetings and spoke at the hearing in support of the measure.
