Students from the Wicomico County Public Schools Newcomer Program participated in a "Day of Service" with our Ocean City Chapter last week. Students spent the morning at Go Green OC in Bishopville, MD learning about composting and the supply chain that keeps this program running year round. Josh Chamberlain, from Go Green OC, explained the process in detail. Students helped unload and sort unfinished product from local restaurants, monitored temperatures on the compost piles and examined the finished product. Senator Mary Beth Carozza stopped by during our visit to see the education component of this impactful program in action. Surfrider OCMD presented Go Green OC with a donation check in the amount of $500 to help them continue their sustainability efforts.
We then headed to Mother's Cantina on 27th Street for lunch with one of our original Ocean Friendly Restaurants. Students were treated to chips and salsa, tacos and burritos and encouraging words from Rodney, catering/prep manager, who shared his experiences as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic.
After lunch, we headed out to the beach to dip our toes in the water and do a quick clean up. There was a shortage of trash on the beach (yay) but no shortage of enthusiasm from this group of students. It was an inspirational day for all of us. Thank you to everyone who made this "Day of Service" possible!
