The Mid-Atlantic region of the Surfrider Foundation is excited to announce a new partnership with the well-respected Mid-Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System, or MARACOOS.

The mission of MARACOOS is to, “seek, integrate, share and apply knowledge and understanding of our coastal ocean,” specializing in the integration and delivery of real time and retrospective ocean data to address regional priority issues. MARACOOS is one of 11 regional associations around the nation that are part of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), and is certified by IOOS as a Regional Information Coordination Entity.

Surfrider is already working with other IOOS programs around the country, as the two organizations have many overlapping goals and interests. Partnering provides opportunities for greater communication, education, and collaboration between Surfrider’s coastal and ocean users and MARACOOS’s ocean scientists, industry representatives, and managers.

Surfrider can contribute to MARACOOS’s online ocean data collection system, Oceans Map. Our Blue Water Task Force program, where Surfrider volunteers collect water quality samples, is an obvious choice. Future opportunities could include Surfrider’s fledgling water quality monitoring partnership, SmartFin, which collects data from sensors incased in detachable surfboard fins.

Surfrider sees ocean and coastal data as integral to our goal of ensuring healthy ocean ecosystems, and the economic and recreational activities that rely on them, for generations to come. We are excited to work with MARACOOS!
